Litter Training Your Rabbit in 7 Days (Step by Step)

Litter training a rabbit isn't a mystery โ rabbits are naturally clean animals who pick a corner and stick with it. Our entire household runs on this 7-day plan, and it has worked on every rabbit we've fostered.
Step 0: Spay or Neuter First
Unaltered rabbits mark territory. Period. Without spay/neuter you're fighting biology. Schedule the surgery, wait 4 weeks, then start training.
Pick the Right Setup
- Box: a large cat litter pan or under-bed storage tub. Bigger than you think.
- Litter: paper-pellet (Carefresh, Yesterday's News) or aspen shavings. Never clay clumping, pine, or cedar โ toxic to rabbits.
- Hay rack on the side: rabbits poop while they eat hay. Use it.

Day-by-Day Protocol
Day 1-2: Confine the rabbit to an x-pen. Place 2-3 litter boxes in different corners. Drop a few of their existing poops in each box. Watch where they pee โ that's the box that wins.
Day 3: Remove the boxes they ignored. Keep the chosen one. Top with fresh litter and hay.
Day 4-5: Expand their space slightly. If they pee outside the box, soak it up with a paper towel and place that towel inside the box. Wipe the floor with white vinegar to neutralize the scent.
Day 6-7: Full pen access. Reward every time they hop in the box (small herb treat). By end of week 1, expect 90%+ of pee in the box and most poops too.
Troubleshooting
- Pees on the bed: bed is competing with the box. Block bed access for 2 weeks.
- Drops poops everywhere: some "marking" poops are normal in new spaces. Sweep daily; this fades in 2-3 weeks.
- Suddenly stops: check for UTI or arthritis (especially in older rabbits) โ vet visit.

Final Word
The single biggest predictor of success is patience in the first 72 hours. Don't expand the space too fast, don't punish accidents, and don't switch litters mid-training. By day 7, you'll have a clean rabbit and a happier home.
