5 Signs Your Rabbit's Diet Is Actually Working

Rabbits are masters of hiding problems. By the time most owners notice something is off, the underlying issue โ usually diet-related โ has been brewing for weeks. The good news? Your rabbit's body shows you whether their diet is working long before any vet visit. Here are the 5 signs my team and I check every single week.
1. Cecotropes Are Firm and Eaten Quickly
Cecotropes are the small, grape-cluster soft poops your rabbit eats directly from their bottom (yes, that's normal and essential). On a correct diet โ high fiber, low sugar โ you should rarely see them. If you find squashed cecotropes stuck to the cage floor, your rabbit is overfed on pellets, fruit, or sugary veg. Cut treats, increase timothy hay, and they'll vanish within a week.
2. Fecal Pellets Are Round, Dry, and Plentiful
You should see 200-300 round, dry, golden-brown poops in the litter box every day. They should be the size of chickpeas with visible hay strands. Smaller poops = less hay. Misshapen or wet poops = too many sugary foods. We weigh Pepper's poop output once a month โ sounds extreme, but it's the single best diet metric.
3. Stable, Easy-to-Feel Body Condition
Run your hands gently along your rabbit's spine and ribs. You should feel them easily but not see them. If you see ribs, increase pellets slightly. If you can't find them under a fat layer, cut pellets and treats. Mochi gained 200g over winter eating "just one more banana chip" daily โ it adds up fast.

4. Bright Eyes, Clean Nose, Soft Coat
A rabbit on the right diet has clear bright eyes, a dry clean nose, and a coat that springs back when you stroke it. Dull fur, dandruff, or a wet chin (drool) usually point to dental problems caused by insufficient hay. Hay grinds molars down naturally โ without it, teeth overgrow within weeks.
5. Energy and Curiosity
A well-fed rabbit binkies, periscopes, and explores. A rabbit on a poor diet sits hunched, eats slowly, or hides. Watch them in the evening โ the most active rabbit hour. Bean does laps around the living room every night at 7pm. The day he stopped, we found a partial hairball obstruction the next morning. Energy is data.
The 3 Red Flags You Must Act On Today
- Less than 12 hours between meals without eating โ GI stasis emergency, vet immediately.
- No poops in 8+ hours โ same emergency.
- Wet bottom (urine scald or stuck cecotropes) โ fly strike risk in summer; clean and call the vet.
The Right Foundation
Roughly 80% of every meal should be unlimited grass hay (Timothy, Orchard, Meadow). 15% should be fresh leafy greens. Just 5% โ about 1/4 cup per 5 lb of body weight โ should be quality pellets. Treats are treats: a 1-inch piece of banana 2x a week, max.
Check these 5 signs every Sunday. If 4 out of 5 look great, your diet is working. If you're missing 2 or more, adjust before it becomes a vet visit.
