How to Choose the Right Hay Feeder for Your Rabbit (2026 Guide)

If you are spending more than 5 minutes a day picking hay off your floor, you have the wrong hay feeder. After 8 months of testing 6 different models with our test group (Mochi, Pepper, Luna and Bean), here is the framework we use.
The 4 types of hay feeders
1. Wire side-mount racks
The classic. Mounts to the cage wall, holds about a day of hay for one rabbit. Best for: standard wire cages, single rabbits, budget under $10. Our pick: Kaytee Hay Manger.
2. Hanging ball/bag feeders
Suspended from the cage top. Engaging for active rabbits but tend to spill when rabbits pull hay out aggressively. Skip unless you have a quiet eater.
3. Floor-standing hay barns
Wooden or fabric structures that double as a hideaway. Beautiful in free-roam setups. Downside: rabbits will pee in them within 2 weeks. Plan for weekly washing.
4. Combo litter-box hay racks
The setup most experienced rabbit owners use: a litter box with a hay rack mounted on one side, so the rabbit eats hay while pooping (rabbits naturally do this). Highest hay consumption, lowest mess. Requires a separate purchase.
What to look for
- Wire spacing wide enough rabbits do not get teeth caught (~1 inch)
- No exposed plastic edges rabbits will chew
- External refill so you do not have to open the cage daily
- Capacity matched to your rabbit count and size
Our recommendation by setup
Single rabbit, wire cage, budget: Kaytee Hay Manger ($8.99).
Bonded pair or large breed: two Kaytee units OR a litter-box combo setup.
Free-roam: floor hay barn + weekly wash schedule.
Final word
The hay feeder is the single most-used accessory in your rabbit's cage. Spending an extra $5 to get the right one saves hours of cleanup over the year. Whatever you pick, place it next to (or above) the litter box โ that is where rabbits prefer to eat hay.
